THE LEOPARD PRINT

Leopard prints are here to stay, for obvious reasons. This pinnacle of print power suits everyone, is as timeless as it is ageless, and feels at home on countless occasions. Even on the yogamat or at the track, as proven by the record breaking success of Deblon Sport’s first leopard print capsule, Leopard Offwhite. To celebrate this success – meanwhile cheekily kick-starting our new Leopard Hazel capsule – please allow us to take you on a journey through the rich history of the leopard print.

THE LEOPARD PRINT – STRENGTH & SEX APPEAL

In ancient times, textiles were yet to be invented. The first earthlings protected themselves from the elements by literally crawling into the skin of animals. Mankind being mankind, the type of skin soon determined the status: the more dangerous the animal, the higher the wearer was ranked. E.g: leopard rules over rabbit. In ancient Egypt, the leopard skin evolved to stardom: the elite of their time – think high priests and pharaoh’s – claimed leopard skin as their go-to ceremonial dress. To top it off: everyone loves to be associated with the power and grace of felines, leave alone their sultry sex appeal, so it’s crystal clear why leopard prints are utterly irresistible.

THE LEOPARD PRINT – TIMELESS & ICONIC

Closer to home and higher on the time line: around 1920 the leopard print experienced a peak moment. In an outburst of decadence, Hollywood actress Marion Nixon could be seen strolling the streets accompanied by her genuine leopard pet. Indeed: the roaring twenties. In the sixties Christian Dior dedicated an entire collection to the leopard print.

THE LEOPARD PRINT – TIMELESS & ICONIC

Closer to home and higher on the time line: around 1920 the leopard print experienced a peak moment. In an outburst of decadence, Hollywood actress Marion Nixon could be seen strolling the streets accompanied by her genuine leopard pet (1). Indeed: the rrrroaring twenties. In the sixties Christian Dior dedicated an entire collection to the leopard print (2). Mr Dior himself, no stranger to decadence and controversy, labelled the leopard print as follows: ‘if you’re sweet and fair, don’t wear’. Not for cuddly kittens, that much is clear.

The leopard print’s popularity kept on rising, decade upon decade: every self-respecting movie star, president wife and socialite was keen to be portrayed in leopard print. Take a look at Sophia Loren (3), Jacky Kennedy (4) and the world’s first ever it-girl, Andy Warhol’s muse Edie Sedgwick (5). All without exception strong, confident women who used leopard prints to emphasize their personality.

THE LEOPARD PRINT – FEMALE EMPOWERMENT

The invention of elastic fibres such as spandex and elasthane, paved the way for new design possibilities. Slim-fit tops, lingerie and tights (the godmother of leggings) were added to the list of leopard worthy garments (6). When 80s power girl and style icon Debbie Harry ‘adopted’ the print, there was no stopping it: the leopard print shook off its ladylike image and became the world’s most democratic print ever.
